2014-2016 Board of Directors

AABJ is governed by a Board of Directors that consists of the elected officers of the association, the chairpersons of the standing committees (appointed by the president and approved by the elected officers) and one student member (appointed by the president). The current members of board of directors are listed below.

PRESIDENT

Eric Stirgus is a staff writer for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He is currently a reporter on the PolitiFact Georgia team, which fact-checks statements and claims from newsmakers. His previous assignments included covering Atlanta City Hall, DeKalb, Clayton and Henry counties.

Eric began his career at the New York Post, where he worked for three years as a general assignment reporter, specializing in criminal justice issues. He then joined the staff at the St. Petersburg Times (now Tampa Bay Times), where he covered the city of Largo and other communities in Pinellas County.

Eric is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, the Atlanta Press Club and New Zion Christian Church. Eric is originally from Brooklyn, N.Y. and a graduate of New York University.

A. Scott Walton is the managing editor and digital content director at The Atlanta Voice. He is a former long-time staff member at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, where he served as a writer, editor, columnist and online producer. His work also has been published in The Examiner, TheRoot.com, EHow, Golf Connections, and others.

VICE-PRESIDENT OF BROADCAST

Blayne Alexander is a multimedia journalist with 11Alive, where she shoots, edits and reports her own stories. In March of 2011, Blayne made her way to the "Big A" from the "Little A" - Augusta, GA - where she was a reporter and fill-in anchor at WRDW-TV for more than a year.

While in Augusta, Blayne covered a wide range of stories as a general assignment reporter, but focused on education. Her interest in Richmond County schools extended beyond reporting; Blayne was active in the Augusta community and especially enjoyed volunteering and working with students.

Blayne began her television career with NBC News Washington, where she worked as a production assistant for NBC Nightly News. During her time in Washington, Blayne field produced at the White House and on Capitol Hill and produced stories for msnbc.com. Blayne was also front and center for the historic election of President Barack Obama, and helped coordinate pool coverage of the inauguration for the five major broadcasting networks.

In her free time, Blayne enjoys running, catching up on reading, taking pictures around Atlanta and getting involved in the community any way she can. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Junior League of Atlanta and serves on the board of directors for The Scholarship Academy, which helps low-income college students gain access to financial aid. Blayne is also an active member of Atlanta Association of Black Journalists and National Association of Black Journalists.

A proud product of the southwest, Blayne was born and raised in Oklahoma City and graduated from Duke University with a degree in English.

VICE-PRESIDENT OF DIGITAL MEDIA

Joy L. Woodson is an award-winning journalist, with more than a decade of experience in print and online media. She is the current communications director at Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, an environmental advocay organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the Chattahoochee River Basin.

Joy received a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and a master's degree in public administration from Georgia State University's Andrew Young School of Policy Studies.

She has worked as a reporter at the Los Angeles Times, the Stamford Advocate and The State newspaper in South Carolina. Most recently, she was an online editor at AOL/Patch.com.

In addition to her work with AABJ, Joy is member of the National Association of Black Journalists and the Urban League of Greater Atlanta-Young Professionals. She also volunteers her time with Buckhead Church, Habitat for Humanity-DeKalb and various nonprofits that serve and protect children.

When Joy is not serving the community, she enjoys spending time with her family, being active outdoors and and practicing yoga.
